Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are oral prosthetics that replace some or all of the teeth in your mouth. They’re made up of a gum-colored base that holds artificial teeth, which are typically made of either porcelain or composite resin.

Technological advances in dentistry have greatly improved dentures over the years. Today’s dentures are vastly more comfortable, beautiful, and natural-looking than they used to be.

Why should I get dentures?

Your smile serves many functions, and when it’s malfunctioning or missing, it can leave you at a disadvantage.

By restoring your smile, dentures improve your ability to eat, speak, and chew properly. They also restore volume to your face and keep your facial muscles from sagging around your missing teeth.

What types of dentures do you offer?

Shah & Velilla DDS is proud to offer a wide variety of denture types, including:

Complete dentures

Complete dentures replace all of the teeth in your dental arch. They typically stay in place on your gums with suction or adhesive.

Partial dentures

Partial dentures are designed for patients that still have healthy teeth that they want to keep. They have a hole in their base that accommodates your natural teeth, enabling your replacement teeth and natural teeth to work side by side.

Implant-supported dentures

Implant-supported dentures (or overdentures) are designed to secure to dental implants or an underlying natural tooth structure (most often the roots of your canine teeth). Implant-supported dentures allow for stimulation to your jawbone, which prevents the bone loss and jaw shrinkage that occasionally happens with other denture types.

How do dentures feel?

Your dentures might feel slightly awkward at first. This is to be expected while your mouth acclimates to the new appliance. The muscles of your mouth, jaw, and face need time to adjust and learn how to properly keep your dentures in place.

During the adjustment period, some patients report that their dentures feel loose or bulky. You might also notice an increased flow of saliva, and in rare cases, you might have some temporary soreness or nausea.

Your mouth should start to feel normal after a few weeks of use, however, and you’ll notice that it’s much easier to eat and speak while wearing them. You’ll likely start to feel more uncomfortable when you aren’t wearing your dentures!
