When surveyed, Americans listed white teeth as the most desired improvement they would make to their smile. Drs. Shah and Velilla have great options when it comes to teeth whitening for patients in the Detroit Metro area.
According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry
- Virtually all adults (99.7%) believe a smile is an important social asset.
- 96% of adults believe an attractive smile makes a person more appealing to members of the opposite sex.
- Three-quarters (74%) of adults feel an unattractive smile can hurt a person’s chance for career success.
- And when respondents were asked, “What would you like to improve most about your smile?” The most common response was: Whiter & brighter teeth.
- If you are not happy with your smile, teeth whitening may be a good first step.
If you have stained, discolored or yellowing teeth, we would love to discuss our teeth whitening options with you.
We offer two options for teeth whitening:
The in-office approach
In-office whitening is often the preferred method as the process is under direct supervision by our doctors. Additionally, the in-office procedure can provide faster, more dramatic whitening results. The in-office procedure utilizes a strong whitening agent. This formula is applied to the teeth and then activated by a special light. The best results have shown whitening of up to 10 shades in as little as an hour. If you are worried about tooth sensitivity, know that most issues are easily managed by the doctors.
The take-home approach
At-home whitening can be done on its own or in conjunction with your in-office treatment. Drs. Shah and Velilla will fit you for custom whitening trays and then provide you with a professional strength whitening agent. You will wear the trays for a few minutes a day until you achieve the desired result.
Other things to know about whitening
Your whitening results can last as long as you are mindful of what you expose to your newly whitened smile throughout the day. It is best to avoid anything that would stain a white t-shirt. Common staining agents include:
- Dark tea
- Fruit juice
What about over-the-counter options?
While many over the counter options exist like white strips, gels, whitening pens and toothpastes, it is always safest to whiten teeth under your doctor’s supervision. Store bought whiteners may seem like a good idea, but often don’t produce the desired results. Additionally systems that require trays often fit incorrectly and are less effective. If you do choose an over the counter whitening system, please let us know.
